ATVing from the COTTAGE

ATVing is a relatively new sport, and a little over twenty years ago, Haliburton was one of the first jurisdictions in Ontario to permit ATVs on all of it’s County and Municipal roads, as well as on it’s hugely popular Haliburton Rail Trail.

Soon, ATVing became Haliburton’s fastest growing tourism activity. With Haliburton’s Canadian Shield topography and abundant Crown Land, with all it’s unique character and features, some of which is barely visited except by loggers or hunters, riders have access to some of the most diverse and remote trails in Southern Ontario, and less than 2 1/2 hours from the GTA!

OUR COTTAGE is only 3 1/2 kms on ATV-legal road from the Rail Trail. And on that stretch of road between OUR COTTAGE and the trail system, riders pass by on their way out and on their way back: Tim Hortons; Mobil Gas Station; RPM Marine/ATV Dealer; Independent Grocery Store; A & W Restaurant/Drive-thru; and a Beer store licenced Convenience Store! In this aerial photo from directly over the cottage, these various businesses are mostly included in that cluster of businesses in the top-left corner.

The ATV trailhead is a few hundred metres further along.

And just 4 kms down the Rail Trail, riders have the option of accessing the infamous (winch-only) Hillbilly Trail and Goat Trail,

or just another 4 kms down the Rail Trail, the somewhat less intimadating Bark Lake Trail.

Each of these trails end up at the town of Gooderham. Gooderham is the trail head of the granddaddy of Crown Land off-road trail riding in southern Ontario—the massive 5-Point System, managed by the Kawartha ATV Club, and also the staging point of the OFTR’s annual International Corduroy Enduro for motorcycles, as well as a favourite playground for OF4WD mud boggers and rock crawlers.

Or, ride an additional 10 kms down Haliburton’s pleasant Rail Trail, and riders have access to the expert-rated Miserable Lake trail system, which has a little bit of everything, including a few scenic rest stops along the way.

Or just continue down the Rail Trail right through the towns of Kinmount and Fenelon Falls all the way to Lindsay.
